Canada Betting Payment Methods
Canada licenses betting province by province: Ontario opened its market to private bookmakers in April 2022, Alberta followed in July 2026, and everywhere else only the province’s own site is legal. Here is how Canadians pay, from Interac e-Transfer to cards, and which of the 65 bookmakers reviewed on Betandlink take Canadian players: 58.

Is online betting legal in Canada?
Yes, through the provinces. Section 207 of the Criminal Code lets the government of a province conduct and manage a lottery scheme, including games operated on or through a computer, under its own law; nobody else may run one. Single-event sports betting was added by the amendment to paragraph 207(4)(b), former Bill C-218, which received Royal Assent on 29 June 2021 and came into force on 27 August 2021: since then provinces and territories may conduct and manage bets on a single game, online or in person, while horse racing stays under federal rules.
Ontario is the one province that has let private bookmakers in. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario registers operators and suppliers and sets the Registrar’s Standards for Internet Gaming; iGaming Ontario, set up in July 2021 and an independent agency since May 2025, conducts and manages the market through operating agreements with those operators. The regulated market opened on 4 April 2022, and in May 2024 the Ontario Superior Court held the model consistent with the Criminal Code. In the year to 31 March 2025 it had 49 operators running 84 gaming sites, $82.7 billion in wagers and $3.2 billion in gaming revenue; in the fourth year, to 31 March 2026, wagers passed $103 billion and revenue $4.2 billion, and 91.1% of Ontarians who gambled online said they did so on regulated sites.
Alberta’s regulated iGaming market launched on 13 July 2026, with Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis as regulator and the Alberta iGaming Corporation overseeing the market; operators register with AGLC, sign a commercial agreement with the corporation and must plug AGLC’s self-exclusion programme into their platforms. In the other provinces the legal sites are the provinces’ own: the British Columbia Lottery Corporation’s PlayNow, with its sports betting, and Loto-Québec’s online portal with “paris sportifs” among its products, for example.
Winnings are not taxed. The Canada Revenue Agency tells residents who win at lotteries or gambling in the United States not to report it on their Canadian return, “as this income is not taxable in Canada”, and adds that no credit is given for tax withheld abroad.
Which payment methods work from Canada
Of the 58 bookmakers open to Canada, 49 list Visa and 46 Mastercard, 42 Neteller and 39 Skrill, 29 Paysafecard, 19 Google Pay, 18 Payz, 17 Jeton, 17 MiFinity, 16 Apple Pay, 14 Maestro, 13 MuchBetter, 11 Revolut, 9 AstroPay and 9 PayPal. Twenty-six name a bank transfer, ten Trustly and ten Interac. Forty-two take Bitcoin and 39 Ethereum, five of them crypto betting sites. Discover appears once, American Express never.
- No credit-card ban. Nothing in the federal or Ontario rules we read bars a credit card from a betting account, unlike the United Kingdom since 2020 or Australia since 2024. Whether your issuer books a betting deposit as a purchase or as a cash advance is written in your cardholder agreement.
- Interac is the local route. Ten of the 58 list Interac or Interac e-Transfer, a payment from your own bank account through online banking; limits and fees are set by your bank or credit union, not by Interac.
- Instadebit has closed. The bank-based method still named in one review stopped taking deposits on 27 February 2026 and paid out remaining balances until 30 April 2026; Instadebit itself points customers to Interac.
- PayPal at approved operators. PayPal Canada admits approved gambling merchants in jurisdictions where gambling is legal; nine of the 58 list it, and the cashier of the site you use is the only reliable check.
- Phones and vouchers. Canada is on the country lists of Apple Pay and Google Pay, both for deposits only. Paysafecard is sold in Canada and takes betting payments only from a registered account, and Flexepin vouchers run from $20 to $500 in shops and online through TopMeUp, which asks first-time buyers for a photo ID.

Local payment methods
Interac e-Transfer. The Canadian way to move money from a bank account: you send it from your online banking to an e-mail address or mobile number, and the recipient’s bank credits it, without a security question if they have registered for Autodeposit. It works at more than 250 participating financial institutions, each of which sets its own fees and limits, so check your bank’s caps before a large deposit. The bookmaker tells you in the cashier where to send it; a withdrawal is an Interac e-Transfer in the other direction, credited straight to your account if Autodeposit is on. In 2025 Canadians made 1.6 billion Interac e-Transfer payments, with a record 149 million in October.
Interac in the reviews. Two of the ten reviews name the method in full, Interac e-Transfer; the other eight say only Interac. Interac Debit, the same network’s debit cards, made 7 billion transactions in 2025 but appears in none of the 58 lists: in a cashier the card field takes Visa and Mastercard.
Vouchers. Paysafecard and Flexepin are both sold in Canada for cash at the counter. Flexepin’s online service, TopMeUp, takes up to $2,500 per 24 hours after an identity check of up to one business day and adds a retailer fee of $1.95 on a $20 voucher up to $15.95 on $500; Paysafecard payments to betting sites go only through the registered account.
How to deposit and withdraw from Canada
- Keep the betting account in Canadian dollars. 40 of the 58 bookmakers offer a CAD account; at the others each deposit and withdrawal is converted by your bank or wallet, at 3.99% with Skrill for example.
- In Ontario and Alberta, use a registered site. An operator must be registered by the AGCO and have an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario, or be registered by AGLC in Alberta, to offer games there; look for that registration on the site before you deposit.
- Interac e-Transfer for both directions. Register for Autodeposit so withdrawals land without a security question, and ask your bank what it charges per transfer and what its limits are, since Interac leaves both to the bank.
- Forget Instadebit. It took its last deposit on 27 February 2026; a cashier that still shows it has not updated its list.
- Credit card means issuer terms. With no ban in force, the only cost to check is whether your bank books a betting deposit as a cash advance; a debit card or Interac avoids the question.
- Nothing to declare. Gambling winnings are not taxable in Canada, and the Canada Revenue Agency says so for wins abroad as well.

Questions and answers
Is online betting legal in Canada?
Yes, under provincial control. The Criminal Code lets each province conduct and manage gambling, online included, and since 27 August 2021 that covers single-event sports bets. Ontario has licensed private bookmakers through the AGCO and iGaming Ontario since 4 April 2022, Alberta opened its regulated market on 13 July 2026, and in the other provinces the legal sites are the provinces’ own, such as BCLC’s PlayNow in British Columbia.
How does Interac e-Transfer work at a bookmaker?
You send the deposit from your online banking to the address the cashier gives, and withdrawals come back to your account the same way, instantly if you have Autodeposit. More than 250 financial institutions take part; each sets its own fees and limits, so Interac itself publishes neither. Ten of the 58 bookmakers list it.
Are betting winnings taxed in Canada?
No. The Canada Revenue Agency states that gambling winnings are not taxable in Canada and tells residents not to report even lottery or gambling wins from the United States on their Canadian return.
