What is Skrill?

Skrill is a digital wallet. You load money into it from a card, a bank account or a voucher and pay from the wallet, so the bookmaker never sees your card or bank details. Withdrawals come back the same way, into the wallet, and from there you move them to your bank when you want.

It opened in London in 2001 as Moneybookers, took the Skrill name in 2011 and has belonged to Paysafe since 2015, the same group that owns Neteller. Skrill Limited is authorised by the UK Financial Conduct Authority as an electronic money institution (reference 900001), which means customer money has to be kept apart from the company’s own funds.

Bettors use it for three reasons: the bookmaker only needs the e-mail address of the wallet, withdrawals are faster than to a card, and one wallet serves every bookmaker you play at. Skrill also gives Knect loyalty points on transactions.

How to open a Skrill account

  1. Sign up on skrill.com or in the app. You need an e-mail address, your name, address and date of birth. Skrill accounts are for adults only.
  2. Choose the account currency with care. Pick the currency you use at your bookmakers: every transaction in a different currency costs 3.99% in conversion.
  3. Verify your identity. Skrill asks for a photo of your ID and your face, and a proof of address when needed. Until you do, you can only send and receive small amounts; the limit is shown under Settings › Verification.
  4. Load the wallet. Bank transfer is free; a card costs 1.25%, Rapid Transfer up to 1%, Paysafecard up to 5% (EU fees).
  5. Pay the bookmaker. Choose Skrill in the cashier, type the e-mail of your wallet and confirm the payment on the Skrill page. The money is on your betting account at once.

What it costs

Between Skrill and the bookmaker the service is usually free in both directions: Skrill charges nothing for paying a merchant, and most bookmakers add no fee on Skrill deposits or withdrawals. The costs are elsewhere, in the wallet itself.

Two ways to pay less

Load the wallet by bank transfer instead of by card, and keep the account in the currency of your bookmakers. A bettor who loads €1,000 by card and plays in dollars pays €12.50 to load and about €40 to convert, before placing a single bet.

Deposit and withdrawal times

Deposits are instant. Withdrawals take as long as the bookmaker needs to approve them, from a few minutes to two or three days depending on the operator and on whether your betting account is verified; once approved, the money reaches the wallet at once. That is the real advantage over cards, where the bank adds its own days after the bookmaker has paid.

From Skrill to your bank account, Skrill says the transfer takes between one and five business days.

Where you can use it

Skrill accounts can be opened in most countries, but using the wallet for betting depends on two things: the law of your country and the bookmaker’s licence. Two rules matter for many readers.

Elsewhere, Skrill warns that a card issuer may treat a load used for gambling as a cash advance and charge its own fee. Skrill does not receive that fee, but you pay it.

Skrill and welcome bonuses

Check the bonus terms first

A number of bookmakers, especially in the United Kingdom, exclude first deposits made with Skrill from their welcome offer. If the offer terms list Skrill among the excluded methods, make the first deposit by card or bank transfer and use Skrill from the second one.

Questions and answers

Is Skrill free to use with bookmakers?

Paying a bookmaker from the wallet is free on Skrill’s side, and most bookmakers add no fee. You pay when you load the wallet by card (1.25% for EU accounts), when you withdraw to your bank (1.75%, minimum €3.50) and whenever a transaction changes currency (3.99%).

How long does a Skrill withdrawal from a bookmaker take?

As long as the bookmaker takes to approve it, usually from a few minutes to a couple of days. Once approved, the money is in the wallet immediately. Moving it from Skrill to a bank account then takes one to five business days.

Can I fund Skrill with a credit card to bet?

In the United Kingdom and Australia no: credit cards cannot be used for online gambling, even through a wallet. Elsewhere it depends on your card issuer, which may charge a cash-advance fee on the load.

Do Skrill deposits count for the welcome bonus?

Not always. Several bookmakers exclude Skrill and other e-wallets from the first-deposit offer. Read the payment clause of the bonus terms before you deposit.

Is Skrill safe?

Skrill Limited is authorised by the UK Financial Conduct Authority as an electronic money institution. Customer funds must be safeguarded separately from the company’s money, and the bookmaker never sees your card or bank details.
